Dorota

Today is National Middle Name Pride Day. Or yesterday, according to some websites.

I am always so interested in the story behind people's names. I'm a total name nerd. And middle names usually have the best stories! This is the spot where parents can get creative, use that name that they love but don't want to use as a first name or maybe they take the opportunity to honour a family member or famous person. Whatever the reason, it's rarely a random choice. I really liked this article on the subject!

My middle name is Dorota.

Yes, like Dorota from Gossip Girl. I was so excited to see this name used in North American pop culture! Before that, I told most people that my middle name is Dorothy which is the English translation for Dorota just because it was easier.

My mom's first name is Dorota. Since moving to Canada, she often introduces herself as Dorothy but I prefer the original. My father really liked her name and wanted to give me the same name when I was born but obviously things would get a little confusing with two Dorotas. So it became my middle name.

I couldn't agree more. I turned out to be her only daughter so it is extra special. Having the same name as my mom in a way makes me feel like we have a closer bond. Like she's always with me, no matter what.

Fun fact: Mike's middle name is Paul after Paul McCartney! His dad was a huge Beatles fan.

So tell me, what is your middle name and why? I really want to know! Middle names are important. After all, we wouldn't have monograms without them!

  1. Love the story behind your middle name! My middle name has no significance (my sister shares my mom's middle name) and it's Elizabeth. I love it, but wish it had a good story with it!

  7. I love the story behind your middle name & I prefer the Dorota to Dorothy as well. Awesome!

My middle name is Ann. My maternal grandmother's middle name is Ann so that's where I got it from. :)

  9. That's so cool! I love this story!

My middle name is Lindsay... my parents chose to call me by my middle name instead of my first, and it was a big pain in the butt my whole life! I have since dropped my original first name (Sarah), made Lindsay my first name, and started using my maiden name as my middle name since I got married.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  10. Oh I love the story behind your middle name - how sweet! You have such a unique and pretty name! My middle name is Lauren. My mom wanted to name me Lauren and my dad wanted to name me Laura. They couldn't agree, so I ended up Leslie Lauren. I wasn't named until after they brought me home from the hospital!

  11. Aww I love your middle name! I should've given my daughter my name I love that idea.. but she got her middle name from both our grandmas instead =) My middle name is Alisa, just because "my mom liked it" haha

  12. You have such a pretty middle name! Well, you have a pretty first name too. I've thought that ever since first coming across your blog. It's such a pretty name! And I love that you and your mom share a name! So sweet.

My middle name is Jane and I was also named after my mom. It's her middle name as well. I tease my parents sometimes for never giving me my own name. My first name is after my great-grandmother, my middle name is after my mom and my maiden name was my dad's family name (as per normal). Then I got married and got my husband's last name. So I tease them about not giving me my own name. ;) But I do love the connection between my names and people I love! :)

  13. The first thing I thought of when I read your name was Gossip Girl! That's the only other time I've really heard that name. I love it, though! It's super pretty.
My middle name is pretty typical. It's Nichole. Usually, it's spelled Nicole, so the "H" gives it something a little more unique I guess, but I don't have a fun story to go with it.
    Thanks for sharing! :)

  14. What a unique and beautiful name! I love names that you don't hear every day. Kind of like my first name, Eden. When I was younger I didn't appreciate it, but now that I am older, I really like it.

  15. I love this!!! How special for you and your mom to share a name, even if it is first name/middle name. My middle name is Rose. No significance, I don't think, my parents just liked it :)

  16. I love this post!! I just shared the story behind James' (full) name a week or two ago and this makes me love his name all the more!
My middle name is Marie- that's the name to be passed down to the first born daughter. So it's my mom's middle name, my grandma's, etc. And of course it's Mia's middle name as well :)

  18. Dorota is a beautiful middle name. It's run around my family in the past, which makes sense, they actually grew up in Poland.

My middle name is Dawn. I actually love it. Melissa Dawn has a pretty ring to it. I was originally going to be named Tiffani-Michelle but thankfully my grandmother intervened and told my mom she'd disown her if she named me that lol. I used to hate my first name because of how common it was but now I love it. And I love my middle name. I actually have two, the second one is for my great-grandfather. All I know about Dawn though is that my mom and grandmother thought it up together and that they liked the sound of it. :)

  19. So, so sweet! I actually have a Polish friend named Dorotka but she goes by Dorothy. My middle name is Nichole and it was just one of my mom's favorite names. No significance or meaning behind it other than the fact that she loved it. And, I love it too because she chose it. I was sad to drop it when I got married!

  20. My middle name is Hardy which is my mom's maiden name. It's also two of my cousin's middle names. I love sharing it with them and I love the name.

  21. I love this post! Too bad I missed National Middle Name Day! I'll put it on my calendar for next year! ;) Though I really don't think there's any meaning behind my middle name.

  22. Another great photo of you and your mom! I had no idea about National Middle Name Day! Wait... National... so is it just a Canadian holiday? When I was little, other kids made fun of my middle name (they called me Aunt Jemima), so for a long time I wouldn't tell anyone what it was. It's not Jemima. The background: each of my parents have one sibling. A younger brother. Named James and called Jim. Yes, both of them. The Spanish version of James is Jaime (pronounced HI-may). Despite having no Spanish heritage or connection, my parents took that and feminized it, making it Jaima (HI-mah). But then they Americanized the pronunciation (JAY-mah). So I'm Jaima, after both of my uncles :)

  23. I actually didn't have a middle name (sort of a russian thing - no one has it in my family) so taking my maiden name as my middle name was only natural! I love the story behind your middle name!! I love your entire name - the first and middle are perfect! xo, biana -BlovedBoston

  27. Dorota was one of my favs on Gossip Girl, love that it's your middle name! My middle name was my nana's name, so I kept it when I got married instead of using my maiden name <3

  29. I loved Gossip Girls Dorota!!! I was named similar to you :) Except my first is my mom's middle name. For the longest time people got my mom and I confused because my first and last matched her middle and last so people just assumed that I was my mom and I dropped off the first name.

  30. I completely missed this day, but I love this! So sweet to have that connection with your mom. And so fun to have your name in Gossip Girl, that's the first thing I thought of when I read it haha. My middle name is Elizabeth, named after my maternal great-grandmother. It's also the name of the lake my dad grew up on, but I think that was just a happy coincidence :)

  31. My story is pretty hilarious....my middle name is Cameil because when my mom was a kid dreaming of her future children she would have 15 years later, she like the name chameleon....then when she discovered that was a type of lizard she decided that was a no go but then she discovered the name Cameil and liked it, my dad liked it too, boom. My middle name. hahahaha. it's ok. laugh. it's hilarious. My husband's middle name is Paul too after his father! You know, I've always found it really interesting when people give their kid a middle name that they want to call them by. I've always wondered why they wouldn't just make it their first name, haha but to each their own! What's the pronunciation of your middle name?

  32. Mine is Klaudia. Cause my mom saw some super-cute stickers with it in Rome on their honeymoon and wanted to have a kid whom she could give them to :P I really don't like it :P
